Monday Tilley Watch: The First Double Issue

We’re in the second week of a double issue, so no new New Yorker (and thus, no new New Yorker cartoons) to peruse this morning.

Have you ever wondered when The New Yorker started doubling up issues? The magazine was a weekly from its (famous) first issue, dated February 21, 1925 all the way til December 20, 1993. It managed to publish weekly all through the Harold Ross years, the William Shawn years, and the Robert Gottlieb years. The Tina Brown era brought way too many changes to go into here; the arrival of the double issue was just one of them.
