The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker
The Cover: flashy
The Cartoonists And Cartoons:
Twenty-one cartoons, twenty-one cartoonists (not including the caption contest cartoonists) in this 99th anniversary (double) issue. No duos, that we know of. Two newbies: Tyson Cole and Dabin Han. They are the 3rd and 4th additions to the magazine’s cartoonist stadium this year, and the 148th and 149th additions since Emma Allen took the cartoon editorship reins in May of 2017. The longest active cartoonist in this issue is Roz Chast, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of July 3, 1978.
The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonists:Pia Guerra and Ian Boothby, Dahlia Gallin Ramirez, Paul Karasik

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
You won’t see the above iconic Rea Irvin Talk design in this week’s New Yorker. You haven’t seen it since the Spring of 2017, when it was replaced by — gasp! — a redrawn version. Not looking good for it to return anytime soon, but the Spill dreams on.
