Monday Tilley Watch: The New Yorker Issue Of January 16, 2023

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: Martin Luther King

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Fifteen cartoons, nineteen cartoonists (including this week’s Spot artist, Ed Steed as well as the Caption Contest cartoonists: Brian Hawes & Seth Roberts, Feggo (aka Felipe Galindo), and Michael Maslin. The Spill counts duos as one cartoonist — there are two duos in the issue. There is one newbie: Luke Healy, the first newbie of the year and the 128th cartoonist to be brought into the magazine’s stadium since Emma Allen took the cartoon editor reins in the Spring of 2017. The longest active contributor in the issue is this cartoonist.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

In May of 2017, the above Rea Irvin design for The Talk Of The Town disappeared only to be replaced by — gasp! — a redrawn version facilitated by a contemporary illustrator. The Spill continues to hold out hope that someone at One World Trade Center (the headquarters of The New Yorker) will turn that around and bring the real deal back. In the meantime, read more about the original and its replacement here.
