An Ended Collection
Every year, from 1984 through 2017, I received, gratis, from my employer, a copy of The New Yorker Desk Diary — a wonderfully designed hardcover book generously sprinkled with cartoons (one of my own would usually be included, thus the “gratis” part). When the “gratis” ended in the twenty-teens (due to corporate belt-tightening), I had no desire to pay for them. Although I really liked these diaries, I never put them to use, never wrote in them — the idea of buying them so as to continue the collection seemed, well, unnecessary. The “collection” ended. I suppose I looked at them as time capsules. And now, as I look over them, I do believe that’s exactly what they are.
