Interview Of Interest…Douglas Florian
I recently came across this article from The Weird Show, September 2, 2023, “Studio Visit: Douglas Florian — Collapsing Grids and Living Language” — a short interview with a Spill favorite New Yorker artist, Douglas Florian, whose work has not been seen in The New Yorker since 1984. Mr. Florian contributed 44 cartoons between March 21, 1977 through May 28, 1984. He also contributed 6 covers.
Here’s one of Douglas Florian’s New Yorker cartoons (it appeared in the issue of April April 9, 1979):

Attempted Bloggery Looks At An Addams Redraw
From a Spill fave blog, Attempted Bloggery, September 30, 2025, “The Art of the Redraw: Charles Addams For Alex G. Campbell, Jr.”
In my earliest years at The New Yorker, Lee Lorenz, then the magazine’s art editor, told me it was perfectly fine to redraw one’s published New Yorker cartoon and sell that original, provided some small element was different from the published drawing (the buyer would, of course, be aware they were not buying the published drawing). In this post from Attempted Bloggery we see one of the magazine’s masters do just that with a drawing of his published in The New Yorker, March 22, 1976. See both the redraw in full and the published drawing here.

God, I love that Florian cartoon. Are all his drawings similar to this one. ?
Yes, some really great work. A number of spreads as well!
