Tuesday Spill: Arno In German

Arno In German

Even though my days of feverishly researching Peter Arno are long past, I can’t resist getting hold of any Arno title I’ve never seen before. Somehow, this 1983 German paperback, Peter Arno Cartoons, escaped me until recently (it’s still in Germany at the moment, but heading west to Spill headquarters). Thanks to Google’s translation feature, I believe the banner at the bottom right reads something like, “The famous illustrator from/of The New Yorker.”

The laughing man on tv drawing originally appeared on the cover of The New Yorker way way back in September of 1950:

Looking again at this cover (the Spill library has it both as a single issue and within a bound volume) I can’t help but be blown away by Arno’s outstanding command of design. He give us so much using just a handful of elements.
