Today I point you to Stephen Nadler’s fab site, Attempted Bloggery to see a rare program (provided by Scott Burns) for a production of The Male Animal staged in wartime Paris at The Madeleine Theater.
Ohio State roomies (and life-long friends) James Thurber & Elliott Nugent collaborated, post-college, on the comedy, which became a successful Broadway play (it opened in 1940).
In 1942 The Male Animal was translated to a film, directed by Mr. Nugent, starring Henry Fonda, Olivia de Havilland, and Joan Leslie; the play was also the basis for another film in 1952 ).
(and while visiting Attempted Bloggery, check out the modern day program for the play, The New Yorkers — also a successful effort (it originally opened in 1930) by way of another New Yorker contributor, Peter Arno).
