You won’t see above perfection by Rea Irvin in The New Yorker this week. Sadly, it’s been missing since May of 2017, when it was replaced by — if you can believe it! — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator.
I show Mr. Irvin’s design here because I love seeing it — it’s a large part of the magazine’s DNA. There’s also the hope that whoever makes design decisions at the magazine (you know who you are!) will possibly realize that Mr. Irvin’s design is perfect and that it should be returned to the place it occupied for 92 years.
