Monday Tilley Watch, The New Yorker Issue Of September 2, 2024

The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cover: A hazy shade of Summer

The Cartoonists and Cartoons:

Fifteen cartoons, sixteen cartoonists (Sophia Warren has a “Sketchpad”). One duo, that we know of. No newbies. The longest active cartoonist contributor in this issue is this cartoonist.

This week’s cartoons.

The Cartoon Caption Contest Cartoonist: Avi Steinberg. This week’s contest.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

You won’t see above perfection by Rea Irvin in The New Yorker this week. Sadly, it’s been missing since May of 2017, when it was replaced by — if you can believe it! — a redrawn version by a contemporary illustrator.

I show Mr. Irvin’s design here because I love seeing it — it’s a large part of the magazine’s DNA. There’s also the hope that whoever makes design decisions at the magazine (you know who you are!) will possibly realize that Mr. Irvin’s design is perfect and that it should be returned to the place it occupied for 92 years. Read more here.
