Latest Addition To The Spill Archive: A Chon Day Original Drawing

It’s not unusual for a Chon Day original cartoon to show up online; this particular one captured my attention because of one word in the caption (if you’re on this site, you’ll immediately figure out which word it is). Of Mr. Day’s 1000+ drawings contributed to The New Yorker, this isn’t one of them; I’ve no idea where it appeared. There are markings indicating it was prepared to appear somewhere (an “OK” bottom right alongside either someone’s initials, or possibly the abbreviation for “Monday”).

Chon Day’s A-Z Entry:

Chon Day Born April 6, 1907, Chatham , NJ. Died January 1, 2000, Rhode Island. New Yorker work: 1931 – 1998. Collection: I Could Be Dreaming (Robert M. McBride & Co., 1945)

From the book’s blurb:

In this surprising and hilarious collection of cartoons and anecdotes, Kaamran Hafeez reveals the man behind the material—his experience with The New Yorker, his relationship with editors, his creative process, childhood, personal life, worldview and much more.
