Thurber Thursday: Cassettes, Anyone? Pt.2; Reminder: Liza Donnelly’s “Brief History Of The New Yorker Cartoon” At the 92nd St Y Begins Tonight

The subject of last week’s Thurber Thursday was Thurber on cassettes. With help from James Thurber’s granddaughter, Sara Thurber Sauers (see her Comment), three more cassettes can be added to the (virtual) collection. My thanks to Ms. Sauers for her continued support and assistance.

From Ms. Sauers Comment:

(Top left) My World and Welcome to It, read by John Cullum, Audio Partners 1998.

(Top right) The 13 Clocks, read by Edward Woodward, Abridged (why?!), Dove Kids Audio 1994.

(Bottom) My World and Welcome It, read by Kerry Shale, 1996 Reed International Books (a British edition/reader).

Unfortunately, I could not locate a true cover for the Kerry Shale cassette. So, for now, we’ll make do with an Amazon generic “This Is Not The Actual Book Cover” graphic.

And here’re a few more I found just before post time:

The Unicorn In The Garden, read by Peter Ustinov. Caedmon, 1986.

The World Of James Thurber, read by Henry Morgan. Listening Library, 1985.

James Thurber’s A-Z entry:

James Thurber Born, Columbus, Ohio, December 8, 1894. Died 1961, New York City. New Yorker work: 1927 -1961, with several pieces run posthumously. According to the New Yorker’s legendary editor, William Shawn, “In the early days, a small company of writers, artists, and editors — E.B. White, James Thurber, Peter Arno, and Katharine White among them — did more to make the magazine what it is than can be measured.”

Key cartoon collection: The Seal in the Bedroom and Other Predicaments (Harper & Bros., 1932). Key anthology (writings & drawings): The Thurber Carnival (Harper & Row, 1945). There have been a number of Thurber biographies. Burton Bernstein’s Thurber (Dodd, Mead, 1975) and Harrison Kinney’s James Thurber: His Life and Times (Henry Holt & Co., 1995) are essential. Website
