Latest Addition To The Spill Library…Bemelmans’ My Life in Art

Walking into my fave used bookstore this past Sunday I immediately spied Bemelmans My Life In Art  on a shelf (probably saw it right away because it was much larger than the other books shelved around it). The Spill library has just a few of his books (other than a number of the Madeline series); I’d not known of this book — had never seen a copy before. It’s a nice addition to the library.

Here’s Mr. Bemelmans A-Z Entry

Ludwig Bemelmans  Born, April 27, 1898. Died, October 1, 1962. New Yorker work: contributed six cartoons* and thirty-two covers as well written pieces in a New Yorker career that began in October of 1937 and lasted until August 1962. He achieved lasting fame with his Madeline childrens books.

*According to the magazine’s database, the below is Mr. Bemelmans’ first of a half dozen New Yorker cartoons (it appears in the issue of October 11, 1941. But it’s not really a cartoon — it’s an illustration for Mr. Bemelmans’ own story, “The Valet Of The Splendide.”

I took a look at the five remaining Bemelmans “cartoons” in  the database and found that none were cartoons. Each is a spot drawing (very nice spot drawings of course!). With that bit of clarification out of the way I can say that he did have 32 covers — each a gem. Here’s one (May 10, 1947):
