It’s Wednesday — So Now What?

For as long as I’ve been at The New Yorker, Wednesday has been the day after the week’s “batch” of drawings has been submitted. The deadline for regular contributors is Tuesday, noon. I’ve always thought of Wednesdays as my Mondays. That is, I’ve always begun my “new” week of work the day after the batch has been submitted. On Wednesday, as I begin work, I’ve almost completely forgotten what was submitted the day before. More precisely: I don’t think about what I submitted the day before. What’s drawn is drawn.

Wednesday mornings are like the first day of a new school year — there’s a bit of anticipation, and a measure of calm (no homework due on the first day of school, no tests). I don’t want to let the mention of “anticipation” go by without paying it its due. Anticipation is a huge part of what the work day is all about. What might go down on paper on any given day is, of course, totally unknown. The idea of something happening that works is the carrot on the stick.
