Steinberg, Not Steinberg

Looking through the October 8, 1955 New Yorker I came upon a Steinberg ad for Emerson. Some moments later I ran into what I thought, at first glance, was a second Steinberg ad (for Barwick carpets), but noooo.  (the drawing is credited to someone named “Lynn”).

Interesting piece that ironically neglects to note The Society of Illustrators Drawn From The New Yorker: A Centennial Celebration (it’s the only exhibit dedicated to New Yorker cartoonists — including cover art — in The New Yorker‘s centennial year).  I say “ironically” because there is (and has been) a perception, among some, that the advent of New York magazine marked the beginning of the decline of using cartoons in mass market magazines.
