Personal History: Pre-New Yorker Reading Material

Although it might seem like it’s all about The New Yorker here at Spill headquarters, there’s no denying that before The New Yorker became what it’s become (here) there were other reading materials. Like many kids, it was the comics, mostly in the form of comic books, that ate up the hours. I managed to hang onto just a few comic books from my short pants days (okay, I never actually had short pants, but you know what I mean): an issue of The Flash and a Batman Giant issue are all that remain. I was better at holding on to some of the influential magazines I bought in the next era of comics that became of interest: the underground stuff. Thankfully there are lots and lots (and lots) of books to be found on the subjects of comics and comix. Here’re are a few photos of some of what’s on the Spill shelves, and the boxes stacked in the non-New Yorker areas.

The above: I think the labels tell the tale. Whenever I feel like time-traveling with the real deal these are the boxes that are opened. Or, if it’s more of a thumbing through enjoying/learning experience I’ll visit some of these books below:

And if none of the above seems remotely New Yorker cartoon-related, well…not true. At least for me, all of the above was the poured concrete foundation for the fascination with Harold Ross’s comic magazine.
