More MAD

The New Yorker cartoonist Jason Chatfield has a very nice round-up of thoughts about his visit to the MAD exhibit currently on display at The Norman Rockwell Museum. Lots of photos as well!

Ad From The Past: “Big Hilarious Book” The Fifth New Yorker Album

From the January 3, 1933 New Yorker, this ad for The Fifth New Yorker Album (a few paragraphs below is my well worn copy). The introduction to the book is by James Thurber. The cover originally appeared on the issue of April 2, 1932. Cover artist: Julian de Misky. His A-Z entry…

Julian de Miskey Born 1898, died 1976. NYer work: 1925 – 1962. The New Yorker’s database indicates he contributed 82 cartoons and 62 covers. His first published New Yorker piece was a cover for the issue of May 23, 1925. The following information from de Miskey’s bio on the Papillion Gallery site: born in Hungry, came to the United States in 1914. After attending the NYC’s Art Students League, he began contributing to various publications, eventually contributing to the New Yorker in its first year of publication.

How The Album Came To The Spill : Here’s a very quick tale of how this particular book came to be in the Spill’s library. Ages ago, I happened to mention to the great Edward Sorel that the only New Yorker Album I was missing was the fifth.  Sometime later he contacted me with the great news he’d found one somewhere in New York City. At last the set of New Yorker Albums was f complete! Except…I did not have dust jackets for every album. That became the next hurdle/goal. Chris Wheeler, who runs a spectacular site chock-full of New Yorker information,  kindly offered me the Fifth Album dust jacket (it was the final one needed to complete the set, and, with the exception of the first album, the most difficult one to come by).
