Book On The Horizon…Larry Wood’s Your Caption Has Been Selected
Coming June 2024, from St. Martin’s Press, Larry Wood’s tome on The New Yorker‘s caption contest. According to the book, Mr. Wood has been a finalist in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest a record-setting fifteen times and won eight contests.
Text from the publisher:
“Your Caption Has Been Selected takes you behind the scenes to learn about the contest’s history, the way it’s judged, and what it has to say about humor, creativity, and good writing.”
The Spill has seen an advance copy of the book. From my take on the cartoon caption contest culture by way of the Cartoon Caption Contest podcast and its Facebook counterpart, this book will surely be a welcome must-have for all aspiring (and accomplished) captioners. As a cartoonist, I find the non-cartoonist exploration of cartoon captioning fascinating.
[full disclosure: I spoke with Mr. Wood via email about content as he prepared the manuscript. A couple of my New Yorker caption contest drawings appear in the book]
