Yesterday, after the last of the egg nog was polished off, I gave some thought to James Thurber, Thurber Thursday, and Thurber and Christmastime. I could only think of a handful Thurber-related Christmas-related pieces (I’m betting there are more!):
An ad for the Franklin Simon department store.
Four Christmas cards from his pre-New Yorker days (you can see them in Thurber & Company).
A piece from The New Yorker issue of December 24, 1927 (his seventeenth piece for the magazine): “A Visit From St. Nicholas (In The Ernest Hemingway Manner).” I’m showing you the first two paragraphs of that piece above. To read the rest go here.
And this (an audio reading) from Alarms and Diversions.
