Sunday Reading…Back to The Beginning
Above are books containing work that energized me as a little kid, and prompted me to draw. Every cartoonist rests on a foundation of work by others. Every now and then I like to look through — or sometimes just think about — the work that I first took in. Of course, back then, I wasn’t aware that the work was inspirational — they were simply very interesting worlds to dive into.
I suppose I should say that I didn’t first see the work in these particular books — the books came later. Comic books were the primary source for Batman and Superman (I was probably most obsessed by those two characters); newspaper strips for Dick Tracy and Blondie; television for Mickey Mouse (animated Mickey). Underground artists, and The New Yorker artists were still way way off in the distance.
