Thurber Thursday: Three Spots

Three Spots

This post was not going to be called “three spots” because I assumed I’d be finding more Thurber spots as I made my way through some recently purchased bound New Yorker volumes from the early 1950s. I got as far as these three yesterday when covid came-a-knockin and so had to put the volumes aside til another day.

What’s so wonderful about these spot drawings, besides the drawings themselves, is finding them in 1950s New Yorkers. Small surprises among so many other pieces (there are a number of great Steinberg spots in these volumes). By the 1950s, Thurber was no longer able to draw as he once did, so these are, in the tradition of New Yorker spots, spots likely used before.

The woman and man at a table appeared in the issue of May 13, 1950, and the kids in the issue of June 17, 1950.

I came across the two dancing folks in the issue of May 15, 1954.

  1. Michael, I hope you’re feeling better quickly. We’ve talked before about this, but do you know if the spots or illos are indexed anywhere yet?
