Thurber Thursday: Can You ID This Cartoonist?; An Expensive Thurber Original Drawing

Can You ID This Cartoonist?

Before we move into Thurber country, there’s a cartoonist mystery afoot. The below was forwarded to the Spill the other day with the hope I might know who this cartoonist is. I’ve already asked two of our longest-contributing cartoonists (they began contributing to The New Yorker in the 1960s), as well as the magazine’s former assistant to the art editor in the mid 1970s, and they weren’t able to ID him. The photos were taken in the 1960s, possibly 1970s. If you can solve the mystery, please contact me through the comments section.

ps: I know “Grahm Wilson” is written on the left side, but the consensus from everyone I’ve asked is that it is not Gahan Wilson.

And now to Mr. Thurber….

Here’s a Thurber original drawing (drawings really) that I imagine would requiring breaking many many many piggy banks. It’s listed on ABEBooks:

Here’s the seller’s description:

And here’s the cover of Harper‘s Centennial Issue, showing Thurber’s dancing couple.
