The Monday Tilley Watch takes a glancing look at the art and artists of the latest issue of The New Yorker

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:
Seventeen cartoons, seventeen cartoonists. No duos, that we know of. Two newbies: Jake Thompson and Stephen Raaka, the 22nd & 23rd additions to the magazine’s cartoonist stadium this year, and the 124th & 125th additions since Emma Allen took the cartoon editor reins in May of 2017.
If my addition is correct, and I haven’t inadvertently missed counting a cartoonist in my research, these latest cartoonist additions bring the total number of cartoonists who have contributed to The New Yorker since its very first issue (February 21, 1925) to the nice round number of 700.
The longest active cartoonist contributor in this issue is the one-and-only Edward Koren (and what a drawing it is!); his first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of May 26, 1962.
Number of large on-the-move pickles appearing in cartoons in this issue: 1
Number of cartoons mentioning pickleball: 1
Number of pumpkins in a boardroom: 11
Number of cats shown in cartoons in this issue: 0*
Number of dogs in cartoons in this issue: 0*
Number of superheroes shown in cartoons in this issue: 1*

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:
Way back in May of 2017 the classic Rea Irvin Talk Of The Town design (shown directly below) was plucked from its 92 year old berth and replaced by — gasp! — a redraw. Read more here.
Below are two Talk pages. The one on the left is from the issue of May 15th, 2017, the last issue to contain the above classic; the Talk page on the right is the very next issue, May 22, 2017, where the redraw made its debut (the drawings at the bottom of both pages are by the wonderful artist-illustrator, Tom Bachtell).
