Monday Tilley Watch: The New Yorker “Food & Drink Archival” Issue Of September 6, 2021

The Monday Tilley Watch Takes A Glancing Look At The Art & Artists Of The Latest Issue Of The New Yorker

The Cover: Folks & other creatures thinking of food.

The Cartoonists & Cartoons:

Fourteen cartoons, fourteen cartoonists (no duos that we know of).

So….the second(?) archival issue. My memory is that the only other issue IDed as “Archival” using reprinted drawings to this extent was the December 3, 2018 “Stories” issue. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong on this.

Drawings in the issue range from the distant past (Otto Soglow’s, from 1937, being the earliest) to the not so distant past (Ed Steed’s from 2013). If I had a New Yorker wish jar, one of the wishes would be that these archival issues were published not as regular issues, but as bonus issues, surprising us in our mailboxes and online.

The Rea Irvin Talk Masthead Watch

An archival issue would’ve been an ideal time to bring back Mr. Irvin’s Talk masthead, and let it stay, once re-installed. That hasn’t happened. The — gasp! — redraw that replaced Mr. Irvin’s gem in 2017 remains.

Read about it here.
