Sixteen cartoons, eighteen cartoonists (Barry Blitt has the cover; Ivan Ehlers has a Sketchpad). No duos, that we know of. No newbies. The longest active contributing cartoonist in the issue is Mike Twohy, whose first New Yorker drawing appeared in the issue of July 21, 1980.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

Last week’s 100th anniversary issue would’ve been the moment to have returned Rea Irvin’s perfect Talk design (above) to its berth…but that didn’t happen. Instead we got this:

Now that we have the latest issue — this issue of March 3, 2025 — where this unwieldy design also appears, it’s apparent it’ll be hanging around for awhile. Meanwhile, Rea Irvin’s iconic can’t-be-beat design remains in moth balls. ‘Tis a puzzlement!

  1. I am puzzled about the re-draw of Rea Irvin’s original “Talk” design. What was the reasoning behind it? It’s like replacing your old and beloved record collection with a bunch of digital files. The “pops” are gone, the edges filed off, the warmth dissipated.
