Latest Addition To The Spill Library…The New Yorker Reporter At Large (An Armed Service Edition)

The latest addition to the Spill library, The New Yorker Reporter At Large, is the third addition to the Spill‘s New Yorker Armed Services Edition collection. It was published in March of 1946 (the Spill ‘s Armed Services Edition collection also contains  books by Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, E.B. White, Robert Benchley, and Alexander Woollcott).

With this addition, there is just one remaining ASE New Yorker title to be found: The Dark Ship And Other Selections From The New Yorker (published in June of 1946). The Dark Ship, by Richard O. Boyer.  originally appeared, in two parts in The New Yorker issues of December 16 & December 23, 1944. I’m unable to show the cover of The Dark Ship ASE as there doesn’t seem to be an image of one online (if someone has a copy, I’d love to see the cover).

[Update, August 22, 2024]…and here’s the cover:

Unlike The New Yorker Profiles and The New Yorker’s Baedeker, The Reporter At Large and Dark Ship and Other Selections did not first appear as books (however, The Dark Ship itself did appear as a book).

Here’s the Table Of Contents for The Reporter At Large:

Extra reading: also just arrived this week is a book about the Armed Services Editions, Molly Guptill Manning’s 2014 When Books Went To War.  Have only thumbed through it quickly looking at New Yorker content.  A list of all the Armed Services Editions appears in the book, and can also be found here online.
