Monday Spill: Happy 2024!

Happy 2024!

This being the second week of a double issue, we don’t have a new New Yorker to page through — no freshly baked cartoons to discuss.

It looks to be an exciting year leading up to The New Yorker‘s 100th birthday in February 2025. I’ll try to keep up with all the cartoon news fit to print.

As we begin this new year, I want to thank all who visit this site, and  all of you — cartoonists and non-cartoonists — who have contributed to the Spill by leaving comments, helping me solve cartoon mysteries, correcting errors, sending news and information that’s Spillable, contributing books (see below), artifacts, and cartoon art. All of you make the Spill an informative, and (I hope!) fun place to visit.

Interest in the site grew in 2023 (as measured by “hits”); the Spill was just shy of two million hits for the year. Not bad (I guess) for a one-horse operation focused on a single topic. I’m so grateful that reading about The New Yorker single panel world — the cartoons, and the cartoonists, past, present, and future — remains of interest to all of you. And now…Onward!

–the fellow in the hat celebrating the new year was a long long ago proposed (and then rejected) New Yorker cover idea. I drag it out every January 1st.

Latest addition To The Spill Library:

My thanks (once again!) to Chris Wheeler for contributing this beautiful copy of Peter Arno’s Favorites to the Spill library. The copy I’ve had here has seen better days.

To see plenty more New Yorker collections by the magazine’s artists, visit Chris’s fab website here

Here’s how I described Favorites in my biography of Arno:
