Book of Interest: Seth’s “Clyde Fans”

Out on bookstore shelves on April 30th from Drawn & Quarterly, Seth’s latest, Clyde Fans.  In the meantime, here’s a Publisher’s Weekly piece about it. Seth (Gregory Gallant) began contributing to The New Yorker in 2002.  Below, right, one of his covers.

Chapter Of Interest: Always On Wednesday

In preparation for the upcoming MoCCA Fest panel, Mort Gerberg and Friends, celebrating Mr. Gerberg’s essential  On the Scene: A 50-Year Cartoon Chronicle  (Fantagraphics), I’ve been looking at a lot of Mr. Gerberg’s drawings, as well as his 1983 Cartooning: The Art and The Business.  Admittedly not one for process books (i.e., “how-to”) I was quite surprised to discover in the very first chapter of The Art and The Business  a wonderful first hand account by Mr. Gerberg of what it was like for cartoonists making the rounds of magazines in New York City back in the early 1960s. I’ve shown just the first page of Chapter One’s twenty-three pages (want to continue reading?  You can easily find the book online). This is probably the most extensive account I’ve read about the “look day” of long long ago (so long ago that it is no longer Always Wednesdays, at least at The New Yorker, where it’s been Always Tuesdays for several decades). Even though Mr. Gerberg references The Saturday Evening Post on the first page, any cartoonist who went in to the New Yorker for “look day” will recognize the sign-in sheet tradition.

Cast Recording In The Works For Peter Arno’s Hit Play, The New Yorkers

From the Never Saw This Comin’ Dept.: Playbill reports that a recording of the music from the  1930 Peter Arno play, The New Yorkers is in the works. The music was written by an up and coming composer, Cole Porter. If you want to know much much more about the play and Arno, there’s always this. Listen here to a 1939 version of “Love For Sale” — the infamous song from the play.

A Steve Martin & Harry Bliss Collaboration; The Tilley Watch Online, March 17-22, 2019

A Steve Martin & Harry Bliss Collaboration

Slipped onto newyorker.com late in the day yesterday was the above Bonus Daily cartoon.  Sharp-eyed readers will note that the drawing is co-authored: Bliss/Martin.  I asked Harry Bliss if his collaborator was indeed the Steve Martin, and if so, how it came to be that they worked together.  Mr. Bliss responded in an email:

Yes, it is that Steve. Steve was having dinner with Francoise [Francoise Mouly, the New Yorker’s Art Editor]  and others and mentioned he had a couple dog cartoon ideas, also mentioned he was a fan of my work, so Francoise put us together. This was about three weeks ago and since then we have been collaborating daily, sort of creative email back-and-forth ‘dance’ on various cartoon ideas, most of which will either appear in the magazine and in syndication. It’s a total blast.

The Traveling Cartoon Museum

The Museum of Cartoon Art first caught my attention in September of 1980 when the article above appeared in The New York Times. Since then the museum has moved about a good deal (for a museum).
