Fourteen cartoons, fourteen cartoonists. Two duos, that we know of. No newbies. The longest active contributor in this issue is Roz Chast, whose first New Yorker cartoon appeared in the summer of 1978.

The Rea Irvin Talk Watch:

Well over a decade ago, on the eastern edge of midtown Manhattan, I dropped off my wife and kids at a store, and then, instead of double parking as I waited for them, I decided to drive around and explore the neighborhood. Not knowing the area, I soon found myself in a designated lane that “forced” me to take the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. While in the tunnel beneath the East River, I decided to take a breath, and enjoy the adventure (I knew nothing about Queens, and still don’t). All I knew was that my unplanned trip to Queens would have to be quick; I had to get back to Manhattan to pick up my family — they thought I was circling around in Manhattan waiting for them to come out of the store.

A very kind Queens toll-taker listened to my plight and allowed me to do a U-turn. Soon I was back in Manhattan, telling my family as they got in the car: “I was just in Queens.”  This brings me to Rea Irvin’s classic Talk design shown above. When it disappeared and was replaced by a redrawn version in May of 2017, it seemed an interesting departure — a momentary graphic adventure. But isn’t it time to get back to Rea Irvin?
