New Yorker Cartoons of the Year 2016 Index

An Ink Spill tradition continues with the posting of an Index for the Cartoons of the Year bookazine.   Why an Index you might ask.  Mostly because I always enjoyed seeing them in the magazine’s hardcover anthologies (the New Yorker‘s Cartoon Albums) and missed having an Index for these yearly bookazines (they started in 2010). I wouldn’t read too too much into the numbers of drawings you see listed for each cartoonist, but the Index itself is a reasonably good snapshot of the New Yorker‘s somewhat boisterous stable of cartoonists in these last few years.

You’ll see that few of the entries have a “(cc)” beside certain page numbers.  The “cc” refers to the Caption Contest.  So those particular drawings appeared on the magazine’s back page.  You might notice that there’s an asterisk next to Julia Wertz’s name.  That’s because her name does not appear on the list of contributing cartoonists found on page 4 of the bookazine. She is, however, included on the Contributors page (p.2).

And here you go:

New Jersey’s New Yorkers…an Ink Spill Map

Here’s a look at Garden State born New Yorker contributors (including its current editor) as well as New Yorker contributors (all cartoonists) not Jersey born, but currently living there. Also included: New Yorker contributors who, though not native-born,  grew up there and/or lived there for a good while. If anyone out there has others I’ve missed (and I’m sure I have) please contact me. (click on the map to enlarge).

Tom Toro’s Mystery Rea Irvin Drawing; More Spills with Pat Byrnes, Bob Mankoff, BEK, Gilded-Age Cartoonists & More

Every so often, someone runs into a cartoon mystery.  This time it’s New Yorker cartoonist, Tom Toro.  Here’s Tom to explain:

Calling all cartoon sleuths! There’s a mystery afoot.  I managed to get my sticky paws on an original Rea Irvin drawing but I can’t figure out where it was published or what the caption is.

Does anybody out there know?  It didn’t appear in The New Yorker – if their Complete Cartoons archive is indeed complete.  The only other clues to go on are these stamps that appear on the back of the drawing:

Richard McCallister stamp

As a reward for the correct answer I’ll offer a signed finish of my own.  Thanks for your help, Ink Spillers!

If you can solve Tom’s mystery please use the contact button on this site. I’ll forward your message to Tom.

New Yorker Editor on “Where the Readers Are”; More Spills with Woodman & BEK

David-RFrom The Guardian, this interesting interview with The New Yorker‘s current editor, David Remnick. A former New Yorker editor, Tina Brown, chimes in as well.  [photo: Laura Barisonzi]

note: in the paragraph excerpted below  you’ll notice the mention of “Gadd” cartoons. The word should be “gag”

It would be wrong to see the circulation success as the triumph of seriousness. “The formula of the New Yorker is too complicated to just be called serious … you’re reading a 10,000-word piece on the war in Sudan and speckled within it are Gadd cartoons about talking dogs and desert islands,” he says. “It’s a magical formula.”
